What is Shamanism?
Shamanism has existed for tens of thousands of years and is still practised today by many �wise ones� or �medicine people� in communities that still understand how to live in harmony with nature.

As humanity became more civilized and dependent upon technology our relationship to nature and its mysterious powers were forgotten. The way of our ancestors, who practised this creative and healing art in many parts of the world (including Celtic Portugal) has been consciously �forgotten� yet it is still present in our deepest being, in our genes. No matter how technologically advanced we become we will always be a part of nature, part of the mystery of life. This gives us a key, a potential, to go beyond merely existing in a mundane world.

The shaman, through dream interpretation, extraction of harmful energies that may cause sickness and bad luck, healing rituals, ceremony and herbal remedies is often able to open a gateway to a more balanced life, a life of spiritual empowerment.

Why Shamanism?
In traditional cultures the call to study shamanism was often a significant illness, near death experience, strange dream, a need to understand the mysteries of life, a need to undergo and work with healing, an inclination towards shamanism or a deep call to live life in a different way from normal (more closely to nature). Today, all of the above are highly applicable. Each of us reflects the Universe�s unlimited potential which we can cultivate to unfold hidden talents and attributes � taking us beyond our limited concept of self.

Through positive and practical shamanic ways, there is a �quickening power� that imparts consciousness to the higher self. Understand that limitation is the substance of the mind and that creativity, healing and well-being come to us when the mind is in balance with this unlimited potential.

 Understanding different levels of consciousness through meditations, chants, energy postures, magnetic movements and the Breath.
 Understanding dreams, visions and other messages to help heal ourselves and others.
 Totem plants and animals � the wisdom of nature.

 Awaken lost memories and hidden knowledge linking us to our ancestors and the invisible realms.
 Observe how illness and negative patterns of energy can be extracted from the physical, emotional and spiritual bodies through the healing power of the hands.
 Glandular exercises � awakening the body to consciousness.
 Food combination, diet and losing/gaining weight.


Who is suitable to learn Shamanism?
Lawyers, Social workers, accountants, teachers, mothers, healers, doctors, young and old, anyone who wants to bring healing and well-being into everyday life.

Where does it come from?
Huachuma is a very old shamanic tradition practised in Peru by people who can trace this system of healing to ancient Egypt and Persia. Aspects of Huachuma can be found in many of the ancient religions, systems of healing, oriental teachings and other philosophies.

About Tony Samara
Tony Samara is a Shaman and Ceremonial Leader in the Huachuma tradition of the South American Andes. Whilst living in a community of shamans in the Upper Amazon, he was able to absorb the spiritual knowledge as practiced by these shamans, which culminated in his initiation. He continued his experience in the Andes, learning from those of the Huachuma tradition and was given much information about secret herbal medicines and healing rituals.

Today Tony Samara brings this tradition as an all-inclusive system of self development and personal healing. Allow yourself the time to unwind from those aspects of life which distract you from your spiritual nature and attend one of Tony Samara�s programmes.

SOUTH AMERICAN SHAMANISM INTENSIVE

be prepared for more basic facilities on the island of the Sun

Why a Retreat?

An important part of shamanism is that of total cleansing of the mind and the spirit as well as the body. With this in mind, a four-day retreat will be held in the peaceful surroundings of Mt Mariposa from Wednesday evening 23 June to Sunday afternoon 27 June, 1999.

Allow yourself time to unwind from the distractions of everyday life and focus on your spiritual self. Herbal remedies and specially prepared vegetarian meals will allow your body to release toxins and experience greater vitality and strength. Using meditations, chanting, sacred sounds, rituals and ceremonies, your senses will be heightened to new levels of awareness. Your whole being will be �cleansed� so that these living, creative energies can flow more smoothly between you and the natural world you are in touch with.

Tony will gently but persistantly guide you through this process of transformation teaching you practical skills (which you can take home with you), allowing you to flow more easily through life. Private time with Tony will also be available for dream interpretations or private consultations, should that be necessary.

About Mt Mariposa
Situated 12 km north-west of Tavira & set amongst the rolling hills and rural farmlands so typical of sunny, Southern Portugal, lies Mt Mariposa � a centre where Humanity, Art, Science & Spirituality are meeting and embracing one another. Here, amid the carob, olive & almond trees, where the bird songs fill the air, it is possible to reclaim your inner peace and tranquility.

Accomodation will be in tastefully decorated and comfortable twin-share rooms or dormitories with numerous bathroom/toilet facilities. Beaches are but a 15 minute drive away and a large heated swimming pool surrounded by abundant vegetation will be at your disposal during free time.

The cost of 48,000 escudos includes:

Twin-share/Dormitory accomodation (on a first come first served reservation request basis) for the nights of 23 � 26 June inclusive. (Extra nights of accomodation can be arranged with prior notice to the Centre)
